“等紅燈”用英語(yǔ)難道是I'm waiting for the red light？

如果和外國朋友約好時(shí)間，卻因為等紅燈給耽擱了，你會(huì )怎樣用英語(yǔ)描述你正在等紅燈？

可能你會(huì )脫口而出I'm waiting for the red light，那可就大錯特錯了。Wait for是“等...來(lái)”，所以wait for the red light的意思其實(shí)是“等紅燈出現”。

因此，等紅燈的正確說(shuō)法應該是wait for the green light或者可以說(shuō)wait for the red light to change。

綠燈是green light，但除了“綠燈”的含義，還有一層引申涵義表示“準許”。Give sb. the green light就是“準許某人做某事”的意思。

例：The government has decided to give the green light to the plan. 

政府已決定為這項計劃開(kāi)綠燈。

那么，黃燈要怎么說(shuō)呢？黃燈在英國和美國有不同的表達方式，英國人習慣說(shuō)amber light；美國人習慣說(shuō)yellow light。

例：You should stop at an amber light.

遇到黃燈你應該停下來(lái)。
